Jordy Kerwick x Kazuma Koike

In the Year of the Dragon

8 Feb - 9 Mar, 2024

AISHONANZUKA is welcoming the Lunar New Year with duo-exhibition “In the Year of the Dragon” juxtaposing works by Australian Jordy Kerwick, and Japanese Kazuma Koike, both painters and sculptors. “In the Year of the Dragon” will be on view from the 8th February to 9th March, 2024.

The Dragon has long been an important symbol across cultures—it is said to be a summation of its creators’ innate fear of the nature. As stories are told with dragons in them, so will the collective sentiment be past drown through generations. In this exhibition, both artists has created mythical creatures in their respective works to be passed on as cultural legacy. As a form of cultural medium, artwork often begs for a subjective and incredibly personal interpretation. Koike and Kerwick seem to allow the audience to have a feel of their own respective visions of utopia.

Koike created most artworks by mixing images from different space and time, creating “fictional ancient artifacts” as if they do not belong to any era of the recorded history. He also believes that if sculptures are installed accurately with intrinsic tensions, they are able “make space” or even bend space and time. For this exhibition, Koike has paired his works with used wooden furniture with strong frontality, transporting the audience to another era.

Kerwick's striking visual language stems largely from his homebody lifestyle, often centred on a potted plant with traces of an abandoned cigarette or a pile of playfully titled books, combined with anarchic references to mythical figures, punk, and the odd romantic poet or philosopher reference to reveal deeply personal stories like an inside joke. Kerwick's paintings seem to be prehistoric cave murals transported through time, telling the folklore of polycephalic monsters.
